The Messy Middle: The Ugly Part of Healing No One Talks About
There is a version of healing that looks beautiful.
Soft lighting.
Journals.
Affirmations.
Peaceful mornings.
Calm energy.
Alignment.
And then there is the version of healing that most people don’t talk about.
The messy middle.
The part where nothing looks or feels like progress, but everything is actually changing beneath the surface.
Healing is not always peaceful.
Sometimes healing looks like being overstimulated for no clear reason.
Feeling emotionally drained after a good day.
Crying when you finally slow down.
Wanting comfort and realizing you are the one who has to give it to yourself.
Outgrowing people, places, and patterns before the new ones arrive.
It can feel lonely.
It can feel frustrating.
It can feel never-ending.
And if you don’t understand what this phase is, you might think something is wrong.
But nothing is wrong.
You are just in the middle.
The messy middle is the space where your old life no longer fits.
Your old coping mechanisms stop working.
Your old identity starts to dissolve.
But your new life hasn’t fully arrived yet.
And that gap is where most people turn back.
Not because they aren’t capable of healing.
But because they were never told that it would feel like this.
There is no applause in the messy middle.
No validation.
No clear milestones.
No external confirmation that you are doing it right.
Just you.
Feeling things more deeply.
Seeing things more clearly.
And slowly, sometimes painfully, learning how to stop abandoning yourself.
Recently I had a moment that reminded me of this.
I took time for myself.
I got my nails done.
I allowed myself to relax for a little while.
And later that evening, I felt sad.
Not because anything bad happened.
But because in the stillness, I could feel everything I had been carrying.
That’s the part people don’t talk about.
Sometimes the moment you finally allow yourself softness is the exact moment you realize how long you’ve been holding everything on your own.
Healing doesn’t always feel like relief.
Sometimes it feels like grief.
Awareness.
Emotional honesty.
Release.
Sometimes it feels like recognizing the imbalance in your life and no longer being able to pretend it’s okay.
The messy middle is where you begin to see clearly.
Where you’ve overgiven.
Where you’ve tolerated too much.
Where you’ve stayed too long.
Where you’ve silenced yourself to keep the peace.
And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
That’s why this phase can feel uncomfortable.
Because healing is not just about becoming someone new.
It’s about releasing who you had to be to survive.
And that version of you carried a lot.
She held things together.
She kept going.
She made it work.
But she also learned to push through exhaustion, ignore her own needs, and take care of everyone else first.
Now you’re learning something different.
You’re learning how to pause.
How to feel.
How to choose yourself.
How to receive.
How to set boundaries.
How to tell the truth.
The messy middle is not a setback.
It is not failure.
It is not a sign that you are lost.
It is the part of healing where everything is being recalibrated.
Your nervous system.
Your identity.
Your standards.
Your capacity to receive.
It is quiet work.
Invisible work.
Real work.
And if you’re in this space right now, I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not behind.
You are not doing it wrong.
You are not broken.
You are becoming.
And even if it doesn’t feel like it yet, this part matters just as much as the breakthrough.
Because this is where you build the foundation for a life that actually feels good, not just one that looks good from the outside.
Give yourself more grace here.
You don’t have to rush through this part.
You don’t have to make it look pretty.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just have to stay.
Stay with yourself.
Stay in the truth.
Stay in the process.
The messy middle is not where you get stuck.
It’s where you learn how to stop leaving yourself behind.
There is more for you on the other side of this.
Not because you forced it.
But because you honored this part instead of running from it.
And that changes everything.
With grace,
Natalie
