Spiritual Week Theme: Speaking in Tongues: From Pentecost to Today
Some call it a miracle. Some call it noise. The Bible calls it a gift.
What actually is speaking in tongues and why do so many people across history experience it?
🔑 The Origins
Acts 2 (Pentecost): The disciples spoke, and people from many nations heard them “in their own languages.”
1 Corinthians 12–14: Paul called tongues a spiritual gift but emphasized order and interpretation so it would edify the community.
From the beginning, tongues has been both mysterious and controversial; seen by some as miraculous, by others as confusing.
🕊 My Personal Experience
Growing up, I saw both sides. I was in churches where people spoke in tongues when they felt the Spirit. And I was in churches where tongues were spoken on command; and it felt more like reciting the Lord’s Prayer out of obligation, without truly knowing what was being said.
Do I believe tongues exists? Absolutely.
But I don’t believe it’s natural when it’s forced.
For me, it only happened once during a critical moment in my awakening. Everything in my life was unraveling, and I was desperate for an answer from God. I was a praying soldier, crying out from the deepest part of myself.
And then it happened. A massive energy surged from within me, and it poured out of my mouth as tongues.
It was exhilarating and frightening all at once, because I had never been called to do it before. I thought I wasn’t capable.
That moment taught me the difference between ritual without meaning and a true Spirit-led experience.
Tongues, like prayer itself, is not about performance. It’s about surrender.
🔥 History & Revival
Early church movements embraced tongues as ecstatic prayer.
Modern revival: Topeka, Kansas (1901), Azusa Street (1906, William Seymour), and later the Charismatic Renewal, which brought tongues into mainline churches.
🧠 Science & Spirit
Linguists: Glossolalia sounds like language but lacks structured grammar.
Neuroscience: Brain scans show decreased activity in language areas, suggesting it bypasses the conscious mind.
Believers: Describe it as Spirit praying through them, beyond words or intellect.
🌱 The Reframe
Tongues has often been misunderstood or misused by organized religion. But at its core, it’s another form of prayer, a way to bypass the mind and surrender to Spirit.
Like all prayer, the point isn’t control. It’s connection.

I have experienced speaking in tongues. Although it only happened once. This was during a dark period of my life when I was going through a divorce. I was listening to gospel music and so deeply enthralled in my mishaps and wanting answers from God that it simply flowed. At the time not knowing truly what was happening, but felt spirit lead and connected in a deeper level that I had never felt before.
