Sometimes growth isn’t loud.
It doesn’t arrive with fireworks, applause, or a life-changing announcement.
Sometimes growth looks like making a quiet decision... and never feeling the need to apologize for it.
That’s exactly what happened to me.
The Day I Chose Me
Today wasn’t just about getting a tattoo.
It was about trusting myself.
For years, every tattoo I’ve gotten has represented someone else or something outside of me, my parents, my journey, milestones that shaped who I am.
Even the tattoo that represented my Aquarius identity marked the beginning of discovering who I was.
But this one...
This one was different.
Before my appointment, I kept debating whether I should include paw prints for my dogs.
It felt almost automatic.
I’ve always found a way to include everyone I love.
Then something unexpected happened.
When my artist showed me the stencil, the paw prints weren’t there.
For a split second, I almost asked her to add them.
Instead...
I heard myself think,
“No. This one is about me.”
There wasn’t guilt.
There wasn’t overthinking.
There wasn’t a need to explain why.
There was simply peace.
The Surprise I Didn’t See Coming
Hours later, after I got home, I found myself admiring every tiny detail of the artwork.
That’s when I saw them.
The paw prints.
She had added them.
Not boldly.
Not as the centerpiece.
She had woven them delicately into the stars surrounding the design.
I smiled immediately.
Because somehow...
She had understood exactly what I didn’t know how to ask for.
The tattoo remained about me.
Yet my babies were still part of my story.
Not in front.
Not forgotten.
Simply woven into the background exactly where they belonged.
Then another realization hit me.
There are four paw prints.
Buddy.
Gracie.
Layla.
Teddy.
My first two babies taught me unconditional love.
They taught me comfort.
Physical affection.
Loyalty.
The two who are with me now have walked beside me during the most transformative years of my life.
Seattle.
Phoenix.
Charleston.
The becoming.
Without saying a word...
The tattoo became complete.
The Beauty of Quiet Alignment
The entire experience felt...
Easy.
The studio was peaceful.
Jazz played softly in the background.
Plants filled the room.
The energy was calm.
My artist and I spent hours talking about travel, Charleston, Paris, and even the fascinating history of her family’s Gullah roots.
Nothing felt forced.
Nothing felt rushed.
It simply flowed.
Afterward, instead of hurrying home, I stopped by Charleston’s Riverfront Park.
I sat by the water.
Watched the river.
Took a breath.
I didn’t need to make it an event.
I simply wanted to be present.
Sometimes healing doesn’t require a grand celebration.
Sometimes it just asks us to sit quietly beside the water.
The Difference Between Searching and Trusting
There was another realization today.
For years during my Dark Night of the Soul, I searched constantly.
Tarot.
Numerology.
Astrology.
Patterns.
Birds.
Repeating numbers.
Those practices became anchors when life felt uncertain.
They helped me survive.
Today...
I noticed something had changed.
I still appreciate symbolism.
I still smile when I notice patterns.
I still find beauty in life’s little synchronicities.
But I’m no longer searching because I’m afraid.
I’m noticing because I’m present.
That’s a very different place to stand.
The symbolism no longer carries the weight of needing to save me.
Instead...
It simply reminds me to pay attention.
A Conversation That Changed My Perspective
One of the most unexpected parts of today wasn’t the tattoo.
It was a conversation.
I realized something fascinating.
Sometimes I feel like my thoughts come faster than my words.
Like I know what I mean...
I just can’t always organize it.
Through today’s conversations, something clicked.
It isn’t that someone else is giving me new thoughts.
It’s that sometimes hearing my own ideas reflected back differently helps me recognize what I’ve been trying to say all along.
That realization made me smile.
Because maybe learning isn’t always about receiving new information.
Sometimes...
It’s finally understanding your own.
The Quiet Shift
Today wasn’t dramatic.
No huge announcement.
No major milestone.
No one else may even understand why today mattered.
But I do.
Because today I made decisions without second guessing myself.
I trusted my instincts.
I accepted beauty exactly as it arrived.
I allowed myself to enjoy the moment without trying to control every detail.
That may sound simple.
For me...
It’s profound.
Final Reflection
Maybe that’s what healing eventually becomes.
Not chasing certainty.
Not forcing meaning.
Not needing every answer before taking the next step.
Maybe healing is simply learning to trust yourself enough to move forward...
without constantly looking back.
Today...
I didn’t second guess myself.
And for the first time in a very long time...
That felt completely natural.
Journal Reflection
Where in your life are you still asking everyone else for permission?
What might change if, just once, you trusted the quiet voice within instead?
With grace,
